Rationality and financial risk aversion in large language models: Evidence from a multi-model Holt–Laury experimentCastro Soares, D.; Bittencourt, L. E. B. F.; Tessmann, M. S. · Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Finance, v. 51, 2026

Large language models are increasingly consulted for financial decisions, but whether their choices resemble those of human decision-makers or conform to the prescriptions of rational choice theory remains unclear. We administer the Holt–Laury risk-elicitation task to 98 base language models, giving 118 model–reasoning configurations, under eight prompt conditions that vary temperature, payoff scale, question order, an advice framing, and explicit risk-attitude instructions, for a total of 35,338 valid responses. We define rationality operationally as compliance with stochastic dominance and the single-switch property, take the model as the unit of analysis, and benchmark behavior against 5793 consistent human subjects using formal equivalence tests. Reasoning-enabled configurations are rational in roughly 99% of cases and are statistically equivalent to a risk-neutral expected-value maximizer in every non-persona condition, whereas reasoning-disabled configurations violate a rationality criterion in 25–52% of cases and are far more dispersed across models than the human subjects. No configuration reproduces the moderate risk aversion of the human benchmark. Explicit persona instructions move behavior across almost the entire scale, and reasoning-enabled configurations follow them with near-perfect precision. These results indicate that a language model's risk attitude is not a fixed property but a configurable parameter.

Illegal markets and contemporary slavery: Evidence from the mahogany trade in the AmazonAraujo, D.; Barreto, Y.; Castro, D.; Tigre, R. · Journal of Development Economics, v. 166, 2024

Modern slavery is a major global concern, with an estimated 49.7 million people enslaved in 2022. This paper explores the impact of illegal markets on this phenomenon, focusing on the complete shutdown of the mahogany market in the late 90s in Brazil. Utilizing a quasi-experimental research design that exploits the natural variation in the occurrence of mahogany trees in Brazilian municipalities, we employ novel administrative data on labor inspections to assess the effects of this shutdown on modern slavery. Our results indicate that the mahogany market shutdown significantly increased the probability of labor inspections discovering slave labor in affected municipalities. The outcomes are not influenced by coordinated police efforts targeting locations following the alteration in the law. We validate our findings with several robustness exercises.

Measuring the Effects of an Optimization in Brazilian Environmental Regulation in the Oil and Gas SectorCaldeira, T. C. M.; Tessmann, M. S.; Miranda, R. B.; Castro Soares, D. · International Journal of Energy Economics and Policy, v. 16, n. 1, p. 60–74, 2025

This paper aims to investigate the oil and gas sector in Brazil by assessing how much its results would improve if there were an optimization in environmental regulation. To this end, data from 5 companies traded on the São Paulo stock exchange, the capital asset price model, and input-output matrices are considered. The difference between the CAPM betas of Brazilian firms and firms from benchmark countries is used to estimate the weighted average cost of capital with more efficient environmental governance in the country, which is then used to perform simulations in the input- output matrices. The results indicate that the destruction of the value of investments can vary between 33 and 110 billion reais in 5 years for delays in licensing of 6 and 24 months, respectively, and negative effects on GDP can reach 70 billion reais in 5 years for delays of 6 months in the licensing process. These findings underscore the importance of effective environmental governance for the country and are valuable for policymakers, investors, and supply chain agents who consider the sector in their decision-making.

Mudanças climáticas, mudanças produtivas e saúde: complexas interações na literatura nacionalSantos, L.; Oliveira, J. E.; Maduro-Abreu, A.; Litre, G.; Sátiro, G. S.; Castro Soares, D. · Ciência & Saúde Coletiva, v. 26, supl. 3, p. 5315–5328, 2021

This article reviews the scientific output published in national journals on the interactions that are established between the concepts of climate change, productive changes (including changes in land use) and human health in the last ten years (from 2008 to 2017), highlighting the theoretical-methodological trends of this output. To achieve this, a review of the literature was made from publications made available in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and the CAPES Journals Portal. The results obtained demonstrate the advances made in the last ten years by the interdisciplinary teams that dealt with the subject over the period analyzed. At the same time, this article identifies the research gaps that can be exploited in future research. In addition, a positive sophistication and refinement of analytical tools and instruments have been identified that are able to gather consistent information about a broad and complex reality characterized by the diversity of biomes, climatic scenarios and productive systems.

Relationship between environment, structure and efficiency in contingency theory: a systematic review of literatureCastro Soares, D.; Maduro-Abreu, A. · Revista Foco, v. 12, n. 1, 2019

Contingency theory states that the structure of organizations must be flexible to external contingencies, especially to the dynamic environment. To verify if the current research still analyzes this assumption, the article develops a systematic review of literature on the relationship between structure, environment and efficiency within the context of contingency theory. We used the protocol predicted by Cronin, Ryan and Coughlan (2008) with the bibliometry methodology of Cobo et al. (2011) using the software VosViewer. The results pointed out that a great part of the research that relates the environment and the structure is concentrated in the logistics area. He also pointed out that in recent studies dealing with contingency theory a more efficient structure is reactive to the external environment.

How Did the Ban on Corporate Campaign Financing Affect Different Types of Candidacies? Evidence From ADI 4650 in Brazilian ElectionsRolim Filho, C. M.; Castro Soares, D. · Preprint, Research Square, 2026

This paper estimates the causal effect of the prohibition of corporate campaign donations in Brazil—resulting from the Brazilian Supreme Court’s ruling in ADI 4650 (2015)—on campaign fundraising. The analysis uses microdata from the Brazilian Electoral Court (TSE) campaign finance records covering municipal and general elections from 2006 to 2022. Identification relies on a Difference-in-Differences design with continuous treatment, in which the intensity of the shock varies according to each office’s historical dependence on corporate donations, measured by the average share of corporate contributions in total campaign revenues prior to 2015. The results show proportionally larger declines in fundraising among offices that had historically relied most heavily on corporate donations, and an event-study analysis reveals no differential pre-trends and a sharp and persistent decline beginning in the first election after the ban. The findings provide causal evidence that reforms to campaign finance rules generate heterogeneous effects across political offices, asymmetrically reshaping the distribution of financial resources available for electoral competition.

Who Invests Better? A Benchmark of 100 Large Language Models as Investment Advisors for the Average UserSollero, F. M.; Castro Soares, D. · Preprint, OSF, 2026

This study conducts a large-scale empirical experiment to evaluate the investment portfolio performance of 100 distinct Large Language Models (LLMs) under identical and controlled conditions. Each model receives the same standardized investment allocation task and generates a stock portfolio using only conversational prompting, simulating the experience of an ordinary retail investor interacting with an AI assistant. The experiment evaluates portfolio performance using real market returns, and all portfolios are benchmarked against passive market strategies (S&P 500 buy-and-hold) and random portfolios. The experiment addresses a gap in the literature: no published study has simultaneously compared 100+ LLMs on the same investment task using an identical prompt, fixed temperature, and real market data.

Occupational AI Exposure and the Gender Wage Gap in BrazilCastro Soares, D.; Segatto, L. A.; Sollero, F. M.; Tatagiba, A. N. · Working paper, 2026

Drought, Formal Labor-Market Churn, and Climate Adaptation across Brazil’s Legal Amazon StatesTatagiba, A. N.; Castro Soares, D.; Sollero, F. M.; Segatto, L. A. · Working paper, 2026

Climate shocks threaten sustainable development in climate-vulnerable regions, but their effects on local labor markets are often hidden by a narrow focus on net employment. This paper studies how local drought anomalies affect formal labor markets across Brazil’s Legal Amazon states, where climate variability, land use, and economic vulnerability are closely intertwined. Using a monthly panel of 808 municipalities from 2018 to 2024, we combine administrative formal employment flows from Brazil’s General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (CAGED/Novo CAGED) with local seasonal drought anomalies based on the three-month Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI-3). The main result concerns gross flows, not net employment. A one-standard-deviation local drought anomaly increases formal admissions by 0.042 and separations by 0.041 per 1,000 residents. Total movements rise by 0.082 per 1,000 residents, while net employment changes by only 0.001 and is statistically weak. The mean wage of new admissions falls by about 0.4 percent. The pattern is robust to alternative fixed effects, controls for heat, precipitation dryness, and fires, exclusion of the COVID-19 period, and exclusion of the major drought waves of late 2023 and late 2024. The evidence points to short-run formal labor-market churn and reorganization after local drought shocks, rather than clear job creation or destruction. These results suggest that climate shocks can destabilize formal work well before they show up as net job losses, a distinction relevant for designing climate adaptation and social-protection policy in the Amazon and other climate-vulnerable regions.

When Algorithms Meet the Frontline: Stereotype Bias in Large Language Models' Evaluations of Street-Level BureaucratsCastro Soares, D. e coautores · Working paper, 2026

Governments are increasingly incorporating large language models (LLMs) into public-facing and administrative settings, raising questions about how these systems represent public officials. This study examines whether LLM-generated evaluations reproduce occupational and gender stereotypes associated with street-level bureaucrats. Drawing on the Stereotype Content Model and Role Congruity Theory, we audit 20 LLMs from eight provider or model families using an adapted two-study design. Study 1 maps 30 public occupations along regulation and service dimensions. Study 2 evaluates named bureaucrats in nine occupations on warmth and competence while varying occupational role and gender cues. Regulation-oriented bureaucrats receive lower warmth ratings than service-oriented bureaucrats, while the competence difference is small and not statistically significant. Female-named bureaucrats receive higher warmth ratings and no negative competence penalty. Task-by-gender interactions are not supported, and effect magnitudes vary across models. Relative to the contextual human benchmark, the LLM panel shows larger descriptive differences in warmth, although the designs are not equivalent. These findings show that representational bias in public-sector AI can extend beyond demographic disparities to the occupational and institutional meanings attached to public work.
